Sit on the imperial terrace in the palace garden and gaze at the historic old town and the Elbe. At one time, Emperor Charles IV was so impressed by this view that he chose the castle as his residence. His plans were thwarted, and the imperial castle was burned down by Swedish troops in 1640. If you look east of the Schlosshotel Schkopau, you can admire the lush greenery of the Saale-Elster-Aue nature reserve.
The imposing castle complex, which dates back to the 10th century, was destroyed in 1989, then renovated for several years and was opened in 2001 as a castle hotel. Today it has 54 comfortable rooms and suites, of course, without patina and ghosts. Le Château restaurant serves excellent regional cuisine based on local recipes.
The Gaussig Castle Hotel belongs to a real count family, who attach great importance to etiquette, as well as the fact that male guests appear for dinner at the table in the fireplace room in jackets and ties. As expected, the housekeeper serves tea on a silver tray.
Count and Countess von Brühl-Pohl live with their guests under one roof, a baroque manor in the middle of a landscaped park was built around 1700 by their ancestors. In the days of the GDR, professors came here, and after the fall of the wall, the castle fell into decay. It was then exemplarily refurbished by the Count’s family for three years — and not fully refurbished and has served as a hotel since 2008 — 17 luxurious rooms, a spa and pool, as well as creaky parquet floors, select antiques and four-poster beds.
